How do I keep deer away from my young trees?

I have planted about 30 fruit trees and built chicken wire cages around them about 18 inches off the ground and 5 feet by 5 feet square. The deer Still get into them and eat the branches off, often killing the tree. Short of filling my freezer with venison, I'm at a loss for what to do next. What REALLY works? I have tried several different repellants (human hair, soup, etc).

here's a SERIOUS answer: mix egg whites with water, spray on the leaves. the deer hate it. i have a friend in west marin, california who has done this and she says it works. you must reapply every week and after rain. do this until the tree level is high enough that the deer can't reach the leaves, which means raising the canopy (cutting off lower branches) as soon as the tree has enough on top to constitute 2/3 of the total, ie: the branches you cut should add up to no more than 1/3 of the tree's branches.

What are those common deer-resistant trees and shrubs?

There's a repellant in a piece of machine that works WONDERS on deer and it's called a bullet.

i had a problem with deer trying to influence my young trees as well. The deer would come by with cigarettes and alcohol and my young trees were idolizing the deer and not growing up properly. i called the cops and they gave the deer a good talking to, the deer never came back and my young trees grew up to be strong and wise trees.

Either a better physical barrier or you can try some of the chemical repellents (I've heard mixed reviews about those). Go to a nursery and ask them, there are several out there.

I'd go for the venison if I were you- that'd be two birds right there.

Irish spring soap hung in nylon stockings... they don't like the smell

I read somewhere that they do not like:

Bar Soap

Human Male Urine

Try them and see if you get any results. Maybe using the wiring that they use with horses %26amp; cattle to keep them from leaning against the fence will work? Little zaps of electricity. I accidentally leaned against one once, and it does get your attention and kind of lightly burn, but does not kill.

Good luck!

Get some large dogs and let them run at dawn and at dusk. The deer hate them. and if those trees start idolizing the deer then you won't have to bother with the cops. just put the deer to work and then you can call off the dogs.

I saw a simular question long ago on here and an answerer said to use Dial soap. Hand it from the branches or maybe on your wire cage. I don't know if it will work but have been tempted to try it--I have the same problem but thankfully the wire is keeping them out--so far.

There's deer fencing and deer repellent at you local hardware store, also try researching online, ordering catalogs, or calling biologist at a local college/university or game preserve or federal park. Also. I discovered that deer do not like the smell of marigolds, try planting them around and rubbing the blooms on the lower limbs of you trees. Good luck and thanks for considering the life of the animal.

Uric Acid (human pee) + equal part of ammonia.

Male pee works better because females has too many hormones (plus we can't aim very well).

You have to mix the stuff together and pour it around the tree area. You have to redo it after each rain but nothing...not even a rabbit will cross your line.
