Each human has a terminal length for their hair. It is different from person to person, but I am sure you have seen pictures from women in the 19th century with hair down to the floor. Well, I found that my terminal length is a bit lower than my shoulder blades. However, potential terminal length and the real life length of your hair when you try to grow it as long as possible are two things.

Every hair follicle grows a defined cycle (e.g. 4-8 yrs) and after that it stops growing and falls out (and a new one starts to re-grow). The speed of growth also varies from person to person. The actual length hair can achieve in this time however is completely dependent on other factors: Sun expsure, hairstyles, perms, dyes, overcaring, overbrushing etc. all can damage long hair and break it of, thereby reducing its length.

Maybe people vary. I've seen in books, TV people who had hair so long they could step on them and use them as a trail...although I'm aware that people say that hair has a certain life-span.
